Player on ‘complicated’ negotiations to join Sunderland – Reveals Black Cats’ effort was decisive

Sunderland’s Eliezer Mayenda told AS that Sochaux made transfer discussions difficult for the English club.

The 19-year-old arrived at the Stadium of Light in July 2023 for a rumored sum of slightly more than €1 million.

AS had a lengthy conversation with the winger, during which they discussed the Black Cats’ documentary, Sunderland Until I Die.

They bring it up and ask him how he handled the Championship side’s interest. In response, Mayenda discussed Sunderland’s efforts to persuade the French club to sanction his sale.

“Yes, I believe that everyone has seen that documentary. “I recognized the club when they called me because I had seen it as well,” he explained.

“I went to see the facilities and met the president. We talked, and I felt from away that this was where I was supposed to be.

“The negotiations took a long time because Sochaux refused to let me leave. It was a tough scenario, but Sunderland eventually provided the funds requested by Sochaux, and I was able to travel to England, which was my goal.

“I wanted to advance, gain experience, and continue to grow. I have lofty goals, and Sunderland is a major club in which I am entirely satisfied and motivated.”

In his first season at the club, the Spaniard played only 563 minutes in 15 games, scoring two goals and assisting once.

His circumstances improved dramatically after Régis Le Bris joined at Sunderland last summer. He has seven goals and five assists in 28 league games this season.

Despite his young age, AS made it clear to the attacker that he is a crucial player for Sunderland. The youngster claims his manager frequently reminds him of his age.

“My coach informs me a lot about aging. He tells me that I am extremely young, and this is true. Mayenda emphasized the importance of fully enjoying each game at the moment.

“Last year I didn’t play much, but this season I’m getting minutes and a somewhat more important role in Sunderland.”

“I’m having a good time, and I believe I’ve made significant progress from the previous year. I’m improving every day, and that’s what matters most to me.”

Mayenda hopes to be called up by Spain’s U21 manager Santi Denia during the forthcoming international break.
