Ipswich Town: Luke Woolfenden on form, transfer rumours

Luke Woolfenden, a homegrown defender for Ipswich Town, has ascended the ranks to play in the Premier League. He has discussed signing a new contract, recent transfer rumors, and his form.

According to Stuart Watson… Luke Woolfenden’s journey to the Premier League has been a rollercoaster, much like that of many other members of this Ipswich Town team.

The relaxed defender, who had joined his hometown team at the comparatively late age of 12, got his first experience of men’s football when he was loaned out to Bromley, a National League team. He was devastated that Paul Hurst had moved him on loan to Swindon, a League Two team, at that point because he felt ready to go back and play in the Championship.

Hurst’s tenure was brief; Town was demoted, and Woolfenden came back to establish himself as a vital member of the Blues’ League One squad. His performance in 2020 was so good that he was linked to a transfer to Sheffield, a Premier League team that had just been promoted.

‘Three million doesn’t even get you a flake!’ bragged Paul Lambert. Woolfenden remained, but as Lambert switched teams and Town found itself mired in the third-tier quagmire, he finally found himself in and out of the squad. When Paul Cook got there, he determined that a clear-out was necessary. “I was training with the Under 23s most of the time so I was nailed on to go,” says Woolfenden. “I was waking up most mornings and wanting to be anywhere else other than Ipswich.”

After that, Kieran McKenna was appointed by new American owners. Woolfenden established himself once more as a mainstay in the squad. They were promoted back-to-back. For the local boy, the beers and the tears came pouring down.
