According to Andy Cole, Newcastle United‘s chances of qualifying for the Champions League depend on keeping Alexander Isak healthy.
The former striker, who scored 68 goals in 84 games under Kevin Keegan, is a player who understands the value of scoring goals at St. James’ Park. Cole helped the Magpies get to the top divisions of English football after solidifying their Premier League promotion.
Unfortunately for Newcastle, Cole had already joined Manchester United by 1995–96, and his goals helped St. James’ Park lose the championship. The 53-year-old has backed his old team to make it to Europe and continues to follow the Magpies’ progress.
Cole cited Isak, who has scored 22 goals this season across all competitions, as the key, but he was also concerned with Newcastle’s patchy play. The Magpies fell to ninth place as a result of other outcomes before tonight’s trip to West Ham United.
Cole responded to OLGB’s question about Newcastle’s chances of making it to Europe by saying, “I think so, yeah.” Given the way Alexander Isak is playing and scoring goals, it would be even more beneficial for them if they could maintain him healthy through the end of the season.
“I believe that they will be fine if they win a few more games, but based on their current form, they are a little bit unreliable right now. To place in the top four, they have more than enough.
“At times, Newcastle can be a little bit inconsistent.” Considering that they were the home team, I doubt many would have predicted that they would lose the match against Brighton, but they did. They have fluctuated somewhat, but you simply cannot tell.
