Beighton scrapyard fire: Firefighters describe scene after reports of ‘explosion’ in Sheffield scrapyard
In Beighton, Sheffield, firefighters wore breathing apparatus to combat a fire following a reported “explosion.”
A scrap yard on Rotherham Road saw what locals refer to as a “explosion” on Thursday morning, prompting the dispatch of
emergency personnel to the scene.
Black smoke could be seen rising from the Sheffield location near the railway level crossing.
According to South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, two fire teams from the Aston and Birley fire stations were dispatched after
receiving a call at 11:18 a.m.
“An HGV was involved in an unintentional fire in a scrapyard,” the department informed The Star. A garage had also been affected by the fire.
“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels to extinguish the fire.”
They added their crews left the scene at 12.43pm in the afternoon.
The area’s MP Clive Betts, said on social media: “Following the explosion and smoke from the old Beighton Breakers Yard I have
contacted South Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue for an update.”
Yesterday, there were two notable fires on that side of Sheffield, including the Beighton fire.
Additionally, South Yorkshire firemen were dispatched to assist Derbyshire firefighters in battling a barn fire at Ridgeway Moor,
which is close to Mosborough.
While the situation was going on, several roads were closed and residents were told to close their windows.
