‘Attitude and mentality’ – Crawley Town boss praises players in draw with Reading
Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan’s goal in the first half was neutralized by a late close-range attempt by substitute Panutche Camara.
Both teams played a subpar game of football, with few opportunities, no threat on goal, and numerous careless mistakes.
However, the Reds won’t mind because it ends their losing skid and gives them a crucial point in their quest to remain in League One for the upcoming campaign.
Elliot commented on the game, saying: “Wasn’t it a scrappy game? It was obviously not for two teams that take great satisfaction in attempting to play football.
We kind of countered each other out, so it turned into a battle and a transition, which made it incredibly difficult. Most of the time, I felt we handled it fairly well. I believe that the game was somewhat represented in the few opportunities that were in both boxes.
“The boys had a fantastic attitude and mentality to recover the goal and then go on to win it, despite the disappointing goal they had to give up.”
With the sun shining and the temperature beginning to climb again, it was a perfect day for a football game. However, the pitch did not fare well, which contributed to the game’s low caliber.
Elliot stated: “Ironically, probably all the tactical stuff went out of the window because of the state of the game. The pitch, which is obviously poor and, I believe, documented, was dry because of the heat, and we were unable to play.”
“Crawley’s groundskeeper, Ben, does a fantastic job, but it’s clearly reaching that point in the season where things start to go south. Their efforts to preserve it are outstanding. It becomes difficult for both teams to play once it becomes dry and sticky.
Camara scored his second goal for Crawley, and it was a good one as he ran into the box and then tapped it in.
The fact that he is fasting during Ramadan, which his manager really respected, added even more significance to this.
“I’m really happy with Pan [Camara],” Elliot said. Pam gave it his all during the week, and since it’s Ramadan, he’s obviously fasting. It’s fantastic to have Pam on the field, and he scores the goal. I’m rather happy with him because he was willing to run and do whatever.
With Kamari Doyle repeatedly making risky runs into the middle and Will Swan occasionally finding space on the left-hand side, Crawley occasionally accomplished some pretty good things in the middle of the pitch.
Most of the time, this would result in nothing, and they would not receive any assistance from their teammates—something Elliot wishes to improve on on the training field.
He stated: “We’ve made progress in some really good areas, but we haven’t finished it, and we need to improve on that 100%.”
Additionally, it has control over the build, allowing you to enter numbers. It has all the physical components, but we’re more adept at it.
“We achieve the goal because of it, and you keep doing it, and we need to keep doing that, but if we exhibit that mindset, that drive, and that willingness to work, to run, and to do the terrible things, we know we’ve got quality, and there were some really good performances today, and it’s a point towards where we need to be.”
