More Than 50 Firefighters Tackle Large Blaze at Oldham Church
A major fire broke out at a church rectory in Oldham, with more than 50 firefighters from six stations working overnight to bring the flames under control. The incident occurred at St Mark with Christ Church in Glodwick, where the roof of the disused rectory was fully engulfed in flames upon arrival of the emergency services.
The fire, which started late in the evening, prompted road closures along Glodwick Road (B6194) to allow emergency crews to operate efficiently. Residents in the area were advised to keep their windows and doors shut due to heavy smoke. Firefighters used multiple hoses and an aerial ladder to combat the blaze from various angles, preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings.
Incident Commander Michael Branney praised the firefighters’ efforts, stating that they had made “good, steady progress” despite the scale of the fire. He also thanked local residents for their cooperation during the emergency response. Greater Manchester Police and the North West Ambulance Service were also present at the scene to support the operation.
By early morning, only one fire engine remained at the site as crews continued to damp down the area and investigate the cause of the fire. The road closure was lifted, though pedestrian access near the church remained restricted for safety reasons.
