In the early hours of today a significant fire broke out in Hereford’s High Town area, leading to a massive response from emergency services. Over 100 firefighters and more than 20 fire engines were deployed to combat the blaze, which affected multiple city center buildings.
The fire was first reported at approximately 4:37 am, originating in the Card Factory store. The flames rapidly spread to adjacent shops, causing substantial damage to three primary structures and smoke damage to two others.
West Mercia Police promptly closed several roads to ensure public safety, including Union Street, St Peter’s Street, Offa Street, and St Peter’s Square. Firefighters worked diligently to prevent the fire from spreading further, utilizing hose reels along Commercial Street to access water supplies.
Four individuals residing in nearby flats were evacuated as a precaution. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries, and no persons were reported missing.
The fire significantly disrupted local commerce. High Town and the Buttermarket were closed, affecting numerous businesses. However, other areas, including Maylords Orchard, Widemarsh Street, Broad Street, Commercial Street, and Commercial Road, remained open.
In response to the displacement caused by the fire, Herefordshire Council opened the Shire Hall to accommodate affected shop workers and council officials, providing them with updates and support.
Infrastructure Preservation
Notably, the historic Black and White House in the center of High Town remained undamaged, preserving a significant landmark amidst the destruction.
Due to the extensive use of water to combat the fire, residents in the city center experienced low water pressure or slightly discolored water. Authorities advised the public to be aware of these temporary issues.
