Sunderland 2-1 Cardiff: Chris Mepham seals late win for Black Cats

After Isaak Davies cancelled off Eliezer Mayenda’s second-minute opening, Bournemouth loanee Chris Mepham scored the winner 13 minutes later.

With Sheffield United and Burnley both won, the Black Cats are eight points behind the second-placed Blades with ten games to go. Regis Le Bris’ team, however, has bounced back from consecutive defeats to Leeds and Hull with back-to-back victories following last week’s victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

Cardiff stay 21st, but are only four points above the relegation zone.

Le Bris again chose Mayenda over Wilson Isidor at the start, and the move paid off immediately. Following his double against Wednesday last week, Mayenda opened the score after only two minutes, effortlessly finding the bottom corner after being set up by Patrick Roberts.

Romaine Mundle, who had just returned from a three-month injury hiatus, was lively and dangerous on the left. Perry Ng blocked the winger’s shot following a strong build-up by Mayenda.

It was one way traffic. Trai Hume fired just wide from the edge of the area, and Alan Browne followed up after a left-wing corner was only half cleared.
