Michael Carrick’s verdict following Middlesbrough’s defeat against Swansea City
Michael Carrick was in no mood to defend his Middlesbrough teammates after their defeat to Swansea City, stating they deserved nothing from the game in an uncommon display.
Despite admitting that he didn’t identify his team, they were defeated by the Swans, who were helped by a first-half goal from Jisung Eom.
But for a couple of excellent stops by Boro custodian Mark Travers, the hosts could have won by more. Boro were soundly thrashed in South Wales, with the local side eventually outfighting them. In an uncommon display, they struggled to lay a glove on the hosts, managing only one shot on target throughout the course of 90 minutes.
Despite the fact that the head coach is generally one to openly protect and defend his players, even after a loss, no such sentiments were spoken after this game. Carrick was brutally honest in his post-match assessment.
We didn’t deserve anything from the game,” he said. “I don’t believe we played well; that’s very straightforward. I don’t think we started the game well enough to have a good chance of winning.”
It wasn’t a great game; it was a little rough and scrappy. However, they outperformed us in terms of sharpness, speed, and aggression. I just don’t believe we did enough in the game.” Boro’s setback was compounded by the fact that they concluded the game with midfielder Jonny Howson and left-back Neto Borges at centre back after Dael Fry was injured.
