Inside Huddersfield Town’s attempt to change the culture

There is still work to be done, but Michael Duff has spent the season working to improve his players’ culture and mindset.

A cultural overhaul was necessary for Huddersfield Town following their relegation the previous season.

Since taking over in the summer, head coach Michael Duff has shown his enthusiasm for the initiative. In an address to his players this week, he discussed the necessary steps to eliminate any lingering negative behaviours and create the culture he desires.

These are some of the main topics Duff has recently covered with us, along with certain patterns we have observed.

Be up for every game and stick to the gameplan

Multiple times, Duff has believed that his team has gotten ahead of themselves following successful outcomes and allowed complacency to set in. He had previously referred to it as a “Northampton moment,” referring to his team’s 3-1 home loss to Northampton after their four-goal victory away to Bolton. The major turning point is, of course, the FA Cup loss to Tamworth.

Mickel Miller’s lack of effort in handling his man prior to Manchester United’s equaliser on Tuesday night was used by Duff as an example of what he wants to prevent, despite his repeated insistence that he didn’t want to single anyone out.

“He would have been called for a foul on the touchline if we were playing Man United’s first team at Wembley,” Duff stated. Avoid picking and choosing. Either it’s correct or it’s incorrect.

“It is important. Every day you work matters, and every pass matters. And we’re attempting to get it there because they appear to be a pretty decent squad when they run, show more enthusiasm for the game, and give themselves a platform to play from.

The issue is that Town continues to have game streaks, sometimes full games, when that isn’t the case.
