Exclusive: ‘Outstanding’ Sunderland defender tracked by Chelsea and five other Premier League clubs

Sunderland defender Dennis Cirkin is starting to attract serious transfer interest ahead of the summer window.

Sunderland recruited Dennis Cirkin from Spurs in 2021 for an undisclosed fee, and the left-back has since become an important member of the first squad.
Despite some poor recent performances, Cirkin is the Stadium of Light’s first-choice left-back, and he has previously sparked transfer interest, with Brentford among those linked with the 22-year-old.

Earlier this season, Leeds United were linked with Cirkin, who has played 31 games in the Championship this season, scoring three goals and assisted on two others.

However, Sunderland AFC News can today uncover new transfer interest in the player ahead of the summer transfer season.

Chelsea among Premier League clubs eyeing Sunderland’s Dennis Cirkin

Speaking with Sunderland AFC News, transfer expert Graeme Bailey said that as the summer transfer window approaches, a greater number of Premier League teams are looking into Cirkin.

According to Bailey, Leeds United are still interested, and Spurs are considering a surprise return for their former academy graduate, who has never made a first-team appearance for the North London club.

Bailey advised: “Keep a tight check on Cirkin. I’m told that several Premier League clubs have been working on him. “He is an outstanding prospect for Chelsea, Tottenham, Crystal Palace, West Ham, Everton, and Leeds.”

Cirkin is one of a handful of crucial first-team players, along with Dan Neil, who will be out of contract at Sunderland in the summer of 2026, which means Cirkin will be approaching the final year of his deal.

What’s been said about a new Sunderland contract for Dennis Cirkin?

Despite his recent uneven performances, Cirkin remains a highly regarded player at Sunderland and among Premier League teams, as seen by the rising transfer interest.

Earlier this year, Kristjaan Speakman said that Sunderland had held contract talks with Cirkin and Neil, but that those talks would be postponed until the summer, when the Black Cats’ season would conclude.

Speakman stated, “We had those chats with the boys. Dennis and Dan are unquestionably committed to Sunderland. But I don’t think this is the time to engage in a lengthy discourse with them.”

Sunderland return to action at home against Cardiff City on Saturday.
