Everton star accused of ‘inciting a riot’ against Liverpool as clubs face FA punishments
Liverpool veteran John Aldridge feels that his former team might have been smarter during the Merseyside derby, which resulted in
the FA filing charges against both Everton and the Reds.
Arne Slot was fired, and he is presently awaiting the tribunal’s ruling on his penalty. Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure received
second yellow cards for starting a fight at the final whistle last Saturday, and they were given a one-game suspension.
According to Aldridge, Liverpool might have been more resourceful and Doucoure ought to have behaved better in order to cross the
line. In the final seconds, James Tarkowski scored a goal to save his side a point.
“Doucoure was inciting a riot after the Merseyside derby,” Aldridge wrote in his Liverpool ECHO column. “You can’t do that to the
away fans after the game. Especially after a derby and the last derby at Goodison. You’re inciting a riot by doing it.
“Consider the feelings and emotions between the fans. And Liverpool fans are so emotive, and so far Everton fans — because we’re
from Liverpool. We’re emotional people. We get wrapped up in it and we get caught up in it.
“Everton deserved the result, though it was hard to take from a Liverpool point of view. But you can’t do that to the away supporters
who are gutted about what has happened.
“Curtis has reacted to it. OK, maybe he shouldn’t have barged him but he’s only young. And he’s a Scouser, so Doucoure was inciting
him as well. He should not have done it, Doucoure, he should know better.”
Tawkowski’s late effort cost Liverpool the opportunity to extend their lead in the Premier League title race, even though they were up
by one goal going into stoppage time. If Slot’s team defeats Aston Villa today, they will pass Arsenal by ten points.
“We were too honest against Everton at times,” Aldridge went on. “Iliman Ndiaye twice dove to give Everton advantageous cards, but
Cody Gakpo remained upright after being hauled back. If it had been any other player, they would have gone down and sent the man
off, but I commend him for sticking up.
I think we were a little naive in the Everton game because Ibrahima Konate also gave a slight push. Do I think it was a penalty? No, but
he could have made it look like one. People from other teams would have done it. “Not that I want them to do it. I applaud them for
their honesty. But at the same time, I’m a cynical man and have seen Man City over the years when they’ve been winning titles, and
Arsenal too when they’ve challenged to a degree.”
