Bayern Munich show Bayer Leverkusen who’s boss! Harry Kane & Co. dominate Bundesliga rivals to all-but seal Champions League quarter-final place

Kane opened the scoring for Bayern Munich with a goal in the ninth minute after heading a strong cross from Michael Olise. Jeremie Frimpong had a fantastic opportunity to equalize just six minutes after the star striker broke the deadlock when he intercepted a flimsy back ball from Dayot Upamecano and found himself one on one with Manuel Neuer. The seasoned goalie, though, stepped off his line and stopped the shot.

When Jamal Musiala tried to head in a close-range shot from Joshua Kimmich’s ball in the 22nd minute, he painfully struck the woodwork, doubling Bayern’s lead.

After a howler from Leverkusen goalkeeper Matej Kovar, Musiala finally struck the back of the net ten minutes after the interval, making up for his previous miss. When the Czech goalie mishandled Kimmich’s cross, Musiala was there to capitalize. Nordi Mukiele’s squad was reduced to 10 men after he received a second yellow card for a horrific challenge on Kingsley Coman, which only made Xabi Alonso’s suffering worse.

Then, with a spot-kick to complete his brace, Kane gave Leverkusen the game and the tie. With an absurd challenge inside the box, Edmond Tapsoba pulled down the Three Lions star, and the forward scored the next penalty to make it 3-0. This is the first time the Bavarian powerhouses have defeated their Bundesliga rivals since 2022.

Kane netted a brace in his team’s resounding victory in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 match, capping off his little four-game goal drought in spectacular fashion. He gave them the lead with a strong header in the ninth minute, and he subsequently scored from the penalty spot in the 75th minute to guarantee their advance to the next round. As of the 2024–25 season, the England captain has scored 31 goals in all competitions.
