Stoke City striker nominated for award as two former bosses fight for League One prize

Niall Ennis has had a good start to life on loan at Blackpool

Niall Ennis has been nominated for League One Player of the Month, capping up a promising first few weeks at Blackpool.

The 25-year-old striker joined Blackpool on loan from Stoke City in January. He has scored four goals in his first six games, including two against Crawley. It will be a busy few months as he returns to playing regularly, trying to capture the attention of Mark Robins or another prospective suitor for next season.

He faces Reading centre-back Amadou Mbengue, Wrexham midfielder Ollie Rathbone, and Birmingham City forward Jay Stansfield for the divisional award in February.

According to an EFL release, Ennis arrived on loan on January 30 and made his debut two days later against Charlton, scoring a late equaliser. He subsequently did the same against Mansfield before scoring the first two goals against Crawley, demonstrating his ability to spot opportunities.

Nathan Jones, former manager of Charlton Stoke, is competing for the managerial award against Steven Schumacher, who now works at Bolton. The two are competing for a playoff position.

The EFL statement read: “It has taken Jones some time to add fluidity and style to the solid foundations he has established at Charlton, but his patience and belief are paying off. With nine goals and ten points in five games (in February), his rising team climbed into the playoff picture.

“Schumacher swept into Bolton, bringing with him an air of positivity and belief that inspired his side to three successive comeback wins (in February) against Crawley, Shrewsbury and Leyton Orient scoring nine goals to match their nine points from four games.”

Birmingham’s Chris Davies and Stockport County’s Dave Challinor round up the list of nominees. The winners will be announced on Friday.
