‘We have to’: Leeds United pair sum up dressing room mentality as Sheffield United tighten gap.

Junior Firpo and Joe Rothwell of Leeds United were frustrated that the Whites did not win all three points in their match against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon.

Following two impressive comebacks against Sunderland and Sheffield United in back-to-back weeks, Leeds were held to a scoreless draw at Elland Road.

Firpo’s goal for the second consecutive game put the Baggies behind early on. He rose to glance a header past goalie Joe Wildsmith. However, it ended that way after Darnell Furlong equalized with a West Brom set-piece in the 39th minute.

Both Rothwell and Firpo were interviewed by Sky Sports following the game. The two were disappointed not to have won the game with all of their points.

“There was just one team trying to get the win, and that was us,” Firpo stated. “Obviously, after the last games that we had, a point is a point and I think we will take it.”

“We play attacking football a lot. It fits me well with the style we play, I say a lot. The defender continued, “I think I’m just trying to get into the box to see the cross and today, happy to score again.”

After their two prior performances, Rothwell was questioned about the team’s confidence in their ability to find a champion.

We’ve convinced ourselves of that in the past few weeks, so I believe we must. So, until the referee sounds the whistle, we will attempt to score. I did hope that we might receive another late one today.

Speaking briefly of Junior’s remarks, the on-loan AFC Bournemouth midfielder stated, “It’s a good point, but in the end, there’s only one team that’s really trying to win that game.”

Leeds, who are on a 17-game winning streak in the Championship as they get closer to rejoining the Premier League, have demonstrated a never-say-die mentality in recent weeks, especially while trailing in games.

The team seems to have a strong mindset that holds each other to a high level and expects to win all three points at home, where Leeds has won 14 of its 18 league games this season.

With Sheffield United cutting the lead to first place to just three points with a road victory at Queens Park Rangers, Daniel Farke’s team cannot afford to take it easy in the upcoming weeks. Shortly after the Baggies held Leeds, the Blades triumphed 2-1 at Loftus Road.
