Ipswich Fire Investigating Cause of Large Residential Fire Sunday Morning

 

Ipswich Fire Department is currently investigating the cause of a large residential fire that broke out early Sunday morning, causing significant damage to multiple properties. The fire, which started in a home on Kitchener Road, quickly spread to adjacent houses, prompting a massive emergency response from local firefighters.

 

The fire was reported just before dawn, with emergency services receiving multiple calls about smoke and flames engulfing a residential property. When firefighters arrived, they found the blaze had already spread due to the close proximity of the homes and the shared roof spaces. More than 20 firefighters from Ipswich Fire and Rescue Service were dispatched to the scene and worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control.

 

Despite the intensity of the flames, firefighters managed to contain the blaze before it could spread further. Neighbors were evacuated as a precaution, and authorities urged residents to stay clear of the area. It took several hours for crews to fully extinguish the fire, and they remained at the site throughout the morning to ensure hot spots did not reignite.

 

No Injuries Reported, but Homes Damaged

 

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported as a result of the fire. However, several homes sustained extensive fire, smoke, and water damage. Some residents were left temporarily displaced, and emergency responders worked with local authorities to provide assistance, including temporary shelter and support services.

 

One resident, who lives on the same street, described the terrifying moment they saw flames reaching high into the sky. “We woke up to the smell of smoke and loud crackling noises. By the time we looked outside, the house was already in flames, and firefighters were arriving,” the resident said. “It was really scary to see how fast it spread.”

Ipswich Fire Department and local authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. Early reports suggest that the fire originated in one of the properties before spreading to others, but officials have not yet determined what sparked the blaze.

 

Upon closer inspection of the property where the fire began, authorities discovered what they believe to be a cannabis-growing operation, including several plants and cultivation equipment. Suffolk Police have confirmed that the house was being used as a cannabis farm, which raises the possibility that electrical faults related to the operation could have played a role in the fire. However, investigators have not yet confirmed this as the cause.

This incident is the latest in a series of fires in the Ipswich area. In August 2024, a house fire on Portman Road, suspected to be a targeted arson attack, left a family homeless and resulted in two people sustaining serious injuries. Earlier in February 2024, another fire at a block of flats on Crocus Close led to one fatality.

Officials are urging anyone with information about the Kitchener Road fire to come forward. The police and fire department are working together to piece together the events leading up to the blaze and to determine whether foul play was involved.
