Sheffield United defender “touch and go” for Sheffield Wednesday clash following Blades departure

After the parent club returns, the Blades defender is “touch and go” for the Sheffield Wednesday match.
After returning to parent club Chelsea for treatment on his ankle problem, Alfie Gilchrist is “touch and go” for Sheffield United‘s derby matchup with Sheffield Wednesday next month.

The defender was spotted wearing a protective boot at the Shirecliffe training field after acquiring the problem during recent training.

Gilchrist’s absence is particularly pertinent given that Harry Clarke is doubtful for this weekend’s trip to QPR. The 21-year-old hasn’t played for the Blades in over a month, and Rob Holding’s deadline-day arrival increased United’s total number of loan players to six, one more than the EFL allows in a matchday squad.

Femi Seriki and Jamie Shackleton’s return to fitness has somewhat expanded United’s right-back options, but Gilchrist won’t be back until at least next month. According to manager Chris Wilder, “he’s doing his rehab at Chelsea, so it might be a couple of weeks before he rejoins and is available.”

In order to prepare for the weekend, you want to workout with intensity and tempo, which is why he unintentionally rotated his ankle during training. Alfie doesn’t hold back, as everyone is aware, but he will be alright.

“He will be fit for the Sheffield Wednesday game in a few weeks, and then there will be a break, so he will return for Coventry the following week.”

As the Blades attempt to recover from Monday night’s loss to title rivals Leeds United, which saw Clarke pulled at halftime following a difficult first half against the energetic Manor Solomon, Wilder stated that both Seriki and Shackleton will be part of the squad that heads to Loftus Road today.

Regarding the loanee from Ipswich Town, Wilder stated, “We’re evaluating him.” He was having trouble running after taking a blow on the bottom of his foot. That’s no good in a physical, athletic game. You’re not doing well when you can’t run against someone like Solomon and they’re bringing [Wilfried] Gnonto on.
