City chief Knapper on Rowe and Kamara’s Norwich City exits
Following highly publicized fallouts that led them to take matters into their own hands, the couple left Carrow Road late in the summer season.
In the hours before City’s opening-day loss to Oxford United, Rowe left the matchday squad barely twenty minutes before a team meeting.
The winger, who was well-liked in NR1 before his leaving incident, signed a £14 million loan with a buyout clause to Marseille, severely damaging the close bond he had built with fans during his breakout season.
Due to past dissatisfaction at Carrow Road, Kamara filed an official transfer request before completing a deadline-day move to Championship rivals Hull, which could cost up to £5 million. In each of their meetings this season, City’s supporters jeered him.
Both players were a part of Knapper and head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup’s long-term strategy, but their actions and the public nature of their exits left Colney’s walls with a bad taste in their mouths.
Speaking to outside media for the first time, Knapper considered the respective stories and expressed satisfaction with the club’s handling of the unexpected difficulties the young couple faced.
“There are things that each of them did that hopefully they’ve reflected on and think maybe they could have handled a bit differently,” Knapper stated to the Pink Un.
“However, they are young athletes who experienced challenging circumstances for the first time. Additionally, we must be aware of that situation and exercise some grace.
“There aren’t any animosities, for sure. I’m happy with how we handled them as a club. We responded well, I believe. In two of them, we had positive results. That’s what it’s about sometimes.
“Yes, it would have been wonderful to continue working with them and having them here. However, you must acknowledge that there are instances when it isn’t feasible, and then we must consider how to achieve the greatest result.
“In our opinion, we performed flawlessly in every way. Although I believe they could have done better in several areas, they are still young players, and that is all a part of their learning and growth.
