Rochdale Fire: Residents Woken by Explosion as Blaze Tore Through Warehouse
A massive fire tore through an industrial unit in Rochdale, waking residents with a loud explosion in the early hours of Thursday morning. Around 100 firefighters were called to tackle the inferno on Albert Royds Street in Belfield just after 1:10 AM.
Explosion Heard as Fire Erupted
Locals reported being startled awake by a powerful blast, followed by the sight of towering flames and thick black smoke billowing into the night sky. Emergency services responded swiftly, with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) dispatching multiple fire engines to the scene.
A spokesperson for GMFRS confirmed that crews were met with an intense fire upon arrival. Firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the flames, using specialist equipment and aerial appliances to bring the situation under control.
Residents Advised to Stay Indoors
Due to the scale of the blaze and the smoke spreading across the area, authorities urged residents to keep their windows and doors shut. Nearby roads were also closed as emergency crews battled the fire throughout the night.
One eyewitness described the scene as “terrifying,” stating, “I woke up to a massive bang and saw a huge glow outside. The flames were enormous, and there was thick smoke everywhere.”
Investigation Underway
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and fire investigators are now working to determine how it started. Authorities have not reported any injuries, but the industrial unit has suffered extensive damage.
Emergency services remained at the site through the morning to dampen down hotspots and ensure the area was safe. Residents were advised to remain cautious as the investigation continues.
More updates are expected as authorities assess the full impact of the incident.
