The previously unidentified potential buyer is 61-year-old Robert Platek, according to the Reading Chronicle, which received largely positive responses, albeit with a tone of “we will believe it when we see it.”
After a few minutes, the fan community appeared to be up to speed on the 61-year-old American, thanks to the typical armchair detectives.
But if you’re looking for a synopsis, read on as we examine Mr. Platek.
The banker, who has been with the corporation since 2002 and graduated from Rutgers University in 1986, is perhaps best known for his work with MSD Capital, the division that oversees investments for computer expert Michael Dell.
For Royals fans, it’s even more intriguing that Mr. Platek has prior team ownership experience. He has privately invested, mostly with family, and has bought Spezia in Italy and Sønderjyske in Denmark. He is still the owner of Casa Pia in Portugal, which he took over when it was about to drop to the third division and led to sixth place in the Primera Liga.
Under his leadership, his Danish team, who were consistent in the top division, was demoted because they were allegedly unable to adapt to the football culture in Scandinavia.
At the time of his departure, Spezia, a traditionally lower league team, had just been sold, had been in Serie A for several years, and were fighting for promotion back to the top flight.
Despite the fact that many people doubt the value of owning teams in these nations, he was a member of a group that made an unsuccessful bid to buy Sunderland in 2021, as Kyril-Louis Dreyfus took over at the Stadium of Light.
Given that all of his prior purchases were made with personal funds and operated independently of his position with DFO [previously MSD] Management, the purchase’s structure is still unknown.
With so much work already done on both sides, there are hopes that a deal may be finalized swiftly. However, as with everything related to the club over the last two years, it is never simple.
With the team sitting in ninth place and just three points outside of the play-off spots going into the last 14 League One games, Noel Hunt is still making an impression on the field.
