Tragic fan’s ashes scattered at Ewood Park
Darren John Atkinson, 24, one of Blackburn Rovers’ biggest supporters, had his ashes sprinkled at Ewood Park.
Darren, who had multiple sclerosis, passed away in a sad accident in a hyperbaric chamber at his Isle of Man home.
Born in Burnley Before the family relocated to the Isle of Man, Darren resided in Sabden.
The son he never lived to see, Connor Ewood Darren, was one of the family members at Ewood.
Along with his mother Kirsteen and other family members, the infant is listed as the youngest member of the club.
The club specifically granted permission.
His father John, who used to go to games with him, dropped his ashes in the penalty area while a baptist preacher offered prayers. Sandra, Darren’s mother, stated: “Darren would have wanted his ashes to be here, even though it was a very sad occasion.”
Darren was a member of the Isle of Man Blackburn Rovers Supporters Club, as were his father John, brother David, and wife Kirsteen.
Darren was given a tour of the club and had a picture taken with Alan Wright and Alan Shearer on his 21st birthday.
Darren, a passionate athlete, was 20 years old when his multiple sclerosis symptoms first appeared.
He was 21 when it was diagnosed in 1993.
The situation worsened over time.
He required treatment in a hyperbaric chamber that divers use, and his family banded together to purchase one for him so he could utilize it as needed.
He passed away from carbon monoxide overdose in the chamber.
He was discovered dead by his wife, who was six months pregnant at the time.
A number of family members traveled to Blackburn to witness the ashes being scattered.
In Padiham, Darren’s grandmother still resides. He has aunts in Burnley and Barrow, which are close to Whalley, and another grandmother at Freckleton.
