“Shudder at the name” – West Brom verdict on Blackburn Rovers, Valerien Ismael news
Since Eustace left for Derby County earlier this week, David Lowe has been the Lancashire team’s caretaker manager as they attempt to maintain their hopes of qualifying for the Championship play-offs.
Alan Nixon revealed on Sunday that former Norwich City manager David Wagner and former West Brom manager Ismael were the two front-runners for the position, with an appointment anticipated soon after a long list of names had been connected to the former Premier League Champions.
After reaching an agreement on a contract that would last until the end of 2028, Nixon has subsequently disclosed that the Frenchman will take over as manager of Rovers.
We discussed Ismael’s time at the Hawthorns and how he would be a good fit for the position at a rival play-off contender with Callum Burgess, a West Brom fan commentator on Football League World.
Ismael first gained notoriety in the 2020–21 season when he led his Barnsley team to the Championship play-offs. His direct, attritional style of play swept the second division before losing to Swansea City in the semifinals.
His reputation has now suffered due to a disastrous stint at the Hawthorns, when he was unable to get the newly relegated Baggies fired upon their return to the EFL and left after just seven months.
