Kevin Holt insists he did not make ‘unavailable for selection’ threat to Dundee United ahead of Derry City switch
After missing the Tangerines’ match against Motherwell, Holt completed his transfer to the League of Ireland team over the weekend.
According to a statement released by United, Holt and his representatives made it clear that he might not be available for selection
between now and the end of the 2024–25 season should the transfer not be agreed. However, Holt insisted he had not made any such
threat after being formally introduced as a Derry City player, telling the Derry Journal: “I’m disappointed in (United’s) statement, to
be honest, because I have never, ever turned down playing a game of football. I’ve never expressed to the manager I would never play
for the club. Those words never came out of my mouth!”
When the move happened, I spoke with someone. When the offer was presented, I made it apparent that I wanted to accept and pursue it.
The two-year deal was a possibility. good safety for my family and me.
We spoke several times, and I initially got along well with Jim Goodwin, the manager.
“I have nothing negative to say about him at all, and we had a lot of chats both before and after the relocation was completed.
“” For me, he has been outstanding during my entire tenure at Dundee United.
The lads were all exceptionally talented. They were all aware of the current state of affairs.
Since the Derry transaction was still being finalized, I was obviously not playing in the Motherwell game and wasn’t even present.
“The lads have all been excellent, and they texted me to inquire what was going on.
The fact that they (Dundee Utd) would release that, as though I nearly held them at hostage, disappoints me.
“I would never have said that I would not participate in those games.
“I have never declined to play football for a team I am signed to.”
Holt is eager to experience football on both sides of the Irish Sea and will strengthen Derry City’s defense for the upcoming year.
“Whatever it was, I had a good 20 months at Dundee United, and the club was good to me,” Holt stated. I got along incredibly well with the management and every employee, and the boys are a lovely bunch.
It was difficult for me to decide to go, but after talking to the manager and a few players I knew at the club, as well as the direction the team is taking and other things, I simply made the decision to move on.
