“I expected more” – Burnley FC summer addition panned after Ipswich Town exploits

There would have been high expectations for Jeremy Sarmiento when he joined Burnley on loan for the 24–25 season, given his significant contribution to Ipswich Town’s promotion to the Premier League the previous season.

After spending a year at Portman Road, the Brighton & Hove Albion player was expected to go up, but since Christmas, Clarets supporters have only seen him start three league games. He has spent the last two seasons in the second division.

We talked to Burnley fan pundit Will Lancaster about the 22-year-old’s time at Turf Moor and his overall opinion of last summer’s deal because the Ecuadorian has been knocked down the pecking order by Marcus Edwards’ incredible play since joining on loan from Sporting CP in January, and when Manuel Benson returns to action, his playing time is likely to be even more limited towards the end of the season.

Sarmiento more than contributed to the Tractor Boys’ promotion campaign, even though he didn’t play many starting games for Kieran McKenna’s team in the second half of the previous season. His goals against promotion opponents helped Town get the crucial points it needed to move into the top two. He demonstrated his quality with a late equalizer against Leicester City and a winning goal against Southampton, but those moments have been considerably less often during his tenure in Lancashire, as he hasn’t scored a league goal in claret and blue since November.
