Exclusive:Lawrence Shankland reveals his thoughts on his Hearts future and the prospect of staying on at Tynecastle.
The Scottish striker is in the last months of his contract with the Edinburgh club. Lawrence Shankland, whose contract is coming to an end, has shown an interest in continuing at Hearts beyond the summer. Fresh negotiations are scheduled between the captain and senior Tynecastle officials to see if he can be persuaded to sign a new contract. Shankland is willing to communicate, but he believes there is no need to read too much into any discussions. As things stand, he will become a free agent when his contract expires at the end of the season, allowing him to determine his own destiny. They offered him a contract extension twice early last year but the terms were rejected on both occasions.
Shankland speaks exclusively to the Edinburgh News about his future. “I think it will be the situation with everybody who is out of contract, and it gets to a stage in the season where conversations do need to be had – whether you’re staying or you’re going and the club’s plans for the future,” added the Spaniard. “I wouldn’t read too much into it, but I believe the talks will occur at some point. I believe we will prioritise getting this week out of the way before dealing with that.”
When asked if he is willing to continue with Hearts beyond the summer, he answered, “I’ve never stated I wouldn’t stay. They offered me a contract in January 2024, which was a long time ago. We haven’t really talked about it since, and we’ve just gotten on with things. At the time, the club and I were at ease with the situation and accepted that whatever happened would happen. We will see. It’s at that point; there’s nothing deep about it. We’ll just see what happens from here.”
