But United allowed Nuno Espirito Santo’s side a route back into the game. Nikola Milenkovic made it 4-2 before a late goal from Ryan Yates made it a nervy end.
Eddie Howe made three changes from the 4-0 defeat at Manchester City.
Nick Pope replaced Martin Dubravka in goal and Tino Livramento was preferred to Kieran Trippier at right-back. In midfield, Sandro Tonali was only fit enough to make the bench with Lewis Miley handed his first Premier League in 12 months.
Callum Hudson-Odoi fired the visitors in front just six minutes in but Newcastle’s dominance showed with four goals in 11 first-half minutes.

A cross by Lewis Hall was controlled by Miley before the midfielder fired his shot into the bottom right corner.
Hall was again the creator, linking up brilliantly with Isak. The full-back’s delivery took a deflection into the path of Murphy, who managed the bundle the ball home with his thigh.
A handball by Ola Aina then allowed Isak to make it 3-1 from the penalty spot, despite Matz Sels getting a hand to it. A minute later, the Swede added his second and United’s fourth when he was found in space in the box by Joe Willock.
But the second half couldn’t have been more contrasting from a Newcastle perspective.
Milenkovic made it 4-2 on the hour-mark before substitute Yates netted with three minutes of stoppage time remaining. Fortunately for Newcastle, there was no time for an equalizer.
