West Brom boss drops double striker indication amid options up top
Even while Tony Mowbray doesn’t have an embarrassing amount of money in his striking department, he does have more options than he had when he first arrived.
After Albion lost Josh Maja to injury, Mowbray came to The Hawthorns.
Mowbray had just Devante Cole as a backup while Albion’s top scorer was out of the lineup, but the summer acquisition hasn’t been utilized much since.
Mowbray played without a recognized striker in his first games as manager, highlighting Albion’s dearth of options in that area.
He now has useful assets, though, following a successful transfer window and the return of long-term absentee Daryl Dike.
Although Dike can’t start games right now, Mowbray has some options for his selection thanks to the additions of Adam Armstrong and Will Lankshear.
His choice thus far has been an up-front one, with Armstrong on the left flank and Lankshear leading the line against Millwall.
But at one point, Mowbray hinted that he could try to change things up.
“With Armstrong, I have to decide if we should play two strikers up top at some point,” he stated.
“It might be Lankshear, Dike next to Adam, or Adam on the left.
“Are you just booting it from the back if you play two big strikers, or do you want wingers to cross a lot of balls into the box?
“There are many ways to play, and it’s nice that we have a variety of choices.
“We provided big, strong, technical, and quick guys.
“I return to the process of selecting a team to win the subsequent match. When you win, no one complains, but when you choose a strategy and follow it to win a game and fail, everyone will criticize you.
