Forget Wrexham and Birmingham – Kazakhstan billionaire who bought rival EFL club is the real ‘game changer’.

This season, League One has been about more than simply Birmingham and Wrexham; there has been one team that has caused significant disruption at the top of the third division.

Wycombe presently has one of the two automatic promotion berths, having been purchased by Kazakhstan billionaire Mikheil Lomtadze last summer.

Lomtadze is worth nearly $6bn

According to Forbes, his net worth is $5.8 billion, placing him as the world’s 592nd richest person right now. Lomtadze was referred to as a ‘game changer’ in a PwC piece, and Wycombe fans can be confident that he is living up to that description. Rob Couhig, an American investor, owned the club since 2020. Lomtadze’s Blue Ocean Partners Ltd bought 90% of it, and he made his objectives apparent from the start. “Our goal is to achieve long-term success both on and off the pitch whilst building a financially sustainable club”, commented Lomtadze. “The football world is rapidly evolving, and our first focus will be to incorporate data analytics and technology to boost the club’s performance to new heights.

“I am also a firm believer in youth development, which will be central to the club’s goal. We intend to reopen and establish a leading high-performance academy, which will be an integral element of our long-term goal of developing a club that regularly performs at the highest level.” Wycombe finished 10th in League One last season, and it was always going to be a difficult task to get out of a strong level. Lomtadze’s billions go out against the wealth of Wrexham, backed by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and recently relegated Birmingham, who spent around £25 million last summer and broke the league transfer record several times.
