Clear thinking explained over Sheffield Wednesday substitution despite ‘good’ performance
In Friday night’s furious thrashing by high-flying Burnley, Danny Röhl explained why Sheffield Wednesday took Marvin Johnson off at halftime.
While Max Lowe moved from center back to left back, the Owls benched their left winger Gabriel Otegbayo at halftime at Turf Moor.
Otegbayo had been doing admirably since receiving an unusual respite from the starting lineup at the beginning of the month.
Although a team is allowed three substitutions each Championship game, Röhl has made multiple substitutions during the season, including this one at halftime.
Johnson competed valiantly against the energetic Marcus Edwards, and in the 17th minute, he was sent out for a late challenge.
Edwards opened the scoring just before half-time, with Wednesday boss Röhl later admitting his frustration with how his side defended the goal with so many Owls defenders in the vicinity as the former Sporting Lisbon man jostled his way towards a classy finish.
Röhl was hesitant to risk anything with the 33-year-old facing up against such a crafty operator, but a yellow card ultimately decided the match in favor of Johnson. In all other respects, Johnson’s performance satisfied the German coach.
“When you have a great winger against one player, you have to defend aggressively, and with the yellow card, it was always dangerous,” the Wednesday boss told The Star. The topic of the replacement was this.
Aside from that, Marvin played well in this game; I mentioned being aggressive frequently, but I had to rein him in for his own protection.
He came off because we were anticipating what was to come.
