“We have to look at it like that”: Dons treating Bradford game like a ‘free-hit’

For his MK Dons team, Scott Lindsey is viewing Saturday’s matchup with Bradford City as a bit of a “free-hit.”

With few picking anything but a home victory, the Dons, who are struggling at the bottom of the table, 16th before kickoff, and in poor form, go north to play the Bantams at Valley Parade tomorrow (Saturday).

Dons’ problems over the past three months have caused them to drop from third place in League Two down 13 slots, and they are currently in their worst-ever finishing position this season after losing nine of their last 14 games.

Bradford, on the other hand, are in fifth place and have only lost once at home this season under the direction of former Dons manager Graham Alexander.

When asked if he was treating the game like a free-hit, Lindsey responded, “At this stage we have to look at it like that.” Lindsey had stated in his pregame remarks that he wanted his players to enter the match feeling free of pressure. Although we have attempted to relieve the players of that during this week’s training, I believe they have performed under pressure.

We’ve instructed them to play football with less pressure, have fun, and travel to Bradford. In this game, we are under less pressure. We’re heading to a team in the playoffs, with the same bunch and a strong manager who has been there for a while.

“They’ve enjoyed their cup.”

“We must be a better version of ourselves when we go there.”

“The players looked really anxious last Saturday (in the 1-1 draw with Tranmere Rovers), especially in the second half,” Lindsey added in order to provide more context. I want to take that away from them because I don’t want them to feel awful or enter games in a bad mood.

“I want them to enjoy the ball and feel good about themselves.” It relieves pressure on them to go and generate goal-scoring possibilities at one end and keep it out at the other, so we should enjoy it.
