Tottenham instructed to drop £22m ‘jet-setter’ against Ipswich Town to resolve ‘mystery’ of form

This season, Son Heung-min has had trouble scoring goals for Tottenham Hotspur.
Tottenham Hotspur’s victories over Manchester United and Leicester City have given them their first back-to-back Premier League victories since September.

Ange Postecoglou will then travel to struggling Ipswich Town in an attempt to win three straight games.
As first team players start to get back to their full fitness, it’s the first indication of stability at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in months.

Striker Dominic Solanke is scheduled to make his comeback at the beginning of March, while Wilson Odobert and Brennan Johnson recovered from injuries sustained against Manchester United.

That might provide Postecoglou a selection conundrum, which is unusual in a season when he hasn’t had many alternatives. Son Heung-min, the captain of Spurs, has been a mainstay in the squad, missing just three Premier League games this season.

James Trembath of NationalWorld said on the most recent Tottenham Hotspur podcast that Postecoglou would consider benching the player, who has been unrelenting since joining Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 for £22 million.

“I think that’s a really good question [what has happened to Son], and I think you’d have to say on current form, with returning players, his position in the team, either as the team’s captain or as the club’s captain, might be under a little bit of threat,” Trembath stated.

“Dominic Solanke will be the main attraction when he returns. Does that imply that Mathys Tel will move to the left? Wilson Odobert will undoubtedly return to play that position, Brennan Johnson will be on the opposite side, and Kulusevski will be able to fill in on the flanks. Mikey Moore is making progress, and since he has performed admirably when we have seen him, he merits additional playing time.

Postecoglou has a lot of options and must make important decisions soon.
It would be a significant move for Postecoglou to bench Son against Ipswich after he started in consecutive victories. But it’s one that Trembath thinks might be acceptable.
Son might be suffering as a result of his foreign “jet-setting” duties.

He went on: “You’d argue that Heung-min Son needs a little rest on his current shape; his form is a little mysterious. The hamstring injury earlier in the season is an obvious fact. When he returned against West Ham, he scored a few goals before suffering another injury. He might be carrying a knock.

“You have to consider the quantity of football he plays in addition to the fact that he has been traveling back to Korea for international vacations for several years, which definitely wears down the legs. That might play a role.

“You must also consider his level of confidence. He appears unconfident and has lost up on significant opportunities. Could it be that the leadership is also putting a little bit of pressure on him?

“There are several possible explanations. He has demonstrated in glimpses that he still possesses all the skills necessary to be a world-class player; he can outplay a man and has excellent footwork, but we’re missing that explosive Son. The son who used to attack from the left and use his right foot to smash the ball into the top corner. It simply appears to have somewhat dropped off.
