‘Over the moon’ – Stoke City player reacts to new contract deal

Stoke City goalkeeper Tommy Simkin has said he is ‘over the moon’ to have signed a new deal.

Stoke City have tied down the stopper to a fresh three-and-a-half year contract. SCFC’s youngster is currently out on loan with League Two promotion hopefuls Walsall.

Simkin, 20, has been a hit with the Midlands outfit so far. He has made 34 appearances in all competition and has kept 12 clean sheets for the Saddlers.

penning his extension at the Bet365 Stadium, he has said, as per the official club website: “I’m over the moon tAfter o be here and to continue my journey. I love being a Stoke City player and my family love me being part of the club. My aim is to be Stoke City’s number one in the future and every game I play on loan gives me more experience and takes me closer to that goal.

“Walsall has been an unbelievable experience; I live five minutes from the ground so, while I am not an Academy player there, I feel like one of their own. I have played consistently for them, which is massive for my development at my age, whilst it has also given me consistency in my game.”

Simkin was given the green light to link up with Walsall on a temporary basis last summer to get some more experience under his belt.

He has made the number one spot his own with the Saddlers in this campaign as they look to get promoted to League One under the guidance of Mat Sadler.

The England youth international is due to return to Stoke City later this year and they have a big decision to make on what to do with him next.

Their current options in their goalkeeping department at Viktor Johansson and Jack Bonham.

Simkin has been on the books of the Potters for his whole career to date and has risen up through their academy ranks.

He has been a regular for the Staffordshire outfit at various different youth levels and has played once for their first-team.

The Walsall-born man has also been loaned out to AFC Fylde, Solihull Moors and Forest Green Rovers in the past to boost his development.

What now for Stoke City?

Stoke City are back in action this weekend with an away trip to Norwich City.

They won 3-1 at home to Swansea City in their last match.
