Exclusive: Everton face snub from No.1 target as David Weir decides to stay with Brighton

David Weir, a former captain of Everton, is expected to reject a technical director offer from Brighton to join the team.

Kevin Thelwell, the club’s current director of football, is anticipated to go in the summer as part of a significant revamp by the new owners, The Friedkin Group, and the former Scotland international has been mentioned as a potential replacement.

In December, the Americans fired manager Sean Dyche in favor of David Moyes, with Thelwell and top scout Dan Purdy most likely to follow.

Weir played for Everton for eight years, and during Moyes’ first stint as manager, he led the team. According to reports, the former Scotland international told Brighton that he wants to remain at the Amex Stadium and has no desire to pursue the possibility.

Weir has spent six years at Brighton.Prior to taking Dan Ashworth’s place as technical director three years ago, the 54-year-old’s initial position was managing their lending department.

Brighton would greatly benefit from Weir’s wish to stay, as their recruitment team has recently been raided by rival Premier League teams as a result of their success in the transfer market.

In 2022, Chelsea acquired Paul Winstanley, Brighton’s head of recruitment, and the following year, they pursued Sam Jewell as a replacement.
