Bad news for Taiwo Awoniyi as Nottingham Forest drop £25m clue

After no firm agreement to buy another striker in January became available to Evangelos Marinakis, who wouldn’t have wanted to leave Nuno Espirito Santo short up front, Forest decided to retain onto Awoniyi.

In actuality, though, Awoniyi’s season has been a little dismal because the Nigerian striker has had little opportunities while Chris Wood has broken Forest’s scoring records.

In his most recent opportunity to start, Awoniyi was knocked down against Exeter City, which would have only made him more irritated, especially because he scored in that match, which would have greatly increased his confidence.

Wood resumed his goal-scoring ways in Forest’s defeat at Fulham, even though Espirito Santo now expects Awoniyi to be healthy to play against Newcastle United. If Wood keeps up his current form, the backup striker will have little chance of replacing the Kiwi international on Sunday or in any game.

Given this, Awoniyi will have to make do with his backup position in the Forest squad for the time being, which could get worse if the most recent club transfer rumors are to be believed.

With Marinakis actively pursuing a new striker for the summer, it seemed obvious that Forest would have acquired a new attacker in January if the chance had arisen. However, a deal was never finalized.

Forest may make another attempt to sign Yoane Wissa after their January deal was turned down, but Yuri Alberto, who just finished a season with 31 goals for Corinthians, appears to be a target.
