Community grieving after 7-year-old girl dies in Norwich fire

Following the death of a 7-year-old girl in a Norwich home fire on Tuesday night, the community is in mourning.

Following multiple 911 calls regarding a large burning house with a child trapped inside, Norwich police and firefighters arrived to 83 Summit St. shortly before 5:30 p.m.

According to the neighbors, everyone jumped into action in an attempt to assist.

“The community sort of banded together to try to assist.” In an attempt to assist the mother, people began smashing windows and opening doors, so we dialed 911,” neighbor Hayley recounted.

According to authorities, the two-story house was completely destroyed by fire when firemen arrived.

“It’s the nightmare call,” Norwich Fire Department Chief Tracy Montoya said, adding, “there was fire showing from the front door, two windows from the first floor, two windows from the second floor, and we have reports of a child.”

When firefighters entered the house, they discovered the girl in a second-floor bedroom.

After being taken to Backus Hospital, the 7-year-old girl was declared dead. The child’s identity is now being kept under wraps by the police.

A mother and her three children, a 5-year-old boy, a 7-year-old girl, and a 12-year-old girl, were residing in the house, according to Norwich fire officials. The woman was sent to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

They made a decent family. They would congregate in the pool and host little gatherings and cookouts in the backyard.

They were content. They were incredibly joyful individuals, and the current situation is regrettable.

Given how traumatic it is and how difficult it is to forget the mother screaming for her child, I send my deepest sympathies to the family,” Hayley said.

The district’s family and school employees received a letter from Norwich Public Schools’ acting superintendent on Wednesday informing them of the student’s passing.

“One of our cherished pupils passed away in a terrible house fire that occurred last night for a family associated with our district.

Many of us are in shock and grieving as a result of this tragic incident,” Susan Lessard wrote in the letter.
