Demolition of Burtons Chambers Building Set to Begin on February 21
Accrington is set to undergo a significant transformation as the demolition of the historic Burtons Chambers building, located at 61-79 Blackburn Road (BB5 1JJ), is scheduled to commence on February 21. This redevelopment marks a key milestone in Hyndburn Borough Council’s ambitious town center revitalization initiative, funded by a £20 million Levelling Up grant secured in January 2023.
A full application has been submitted detailing extensive external alterations and improvements to the building’s façade. Plans include replacing existing shop fronts at the ground floor level with modern, contemporary designs, reinstating a curved shop front at the building’s corner, and creating a consolidated main entrance at the northwest corner. Additionally, proposals outline the installation of plant and screen to the rear of the roof, further enhancing the structure’s overall aesthetic and functionality.
The demolition and subsequent redevelopment are expected to breathe new life into Accrington’s town center, fostering economic growth and enhancing the shopping experience for residents and visitors alike. The council has emphasized that these improvements align with its long-term strategy to modernize infrastructure while preserving the area’s rich architectural heritage.
Local business owners and residents have expressed mixed reactions to the planned demolition, with some welcoming the much-needed upgrades, while others voice concerns about potential disruptions. Nevertheless, Hyndburn Borough Council assures that measures will be taken to minimize inconvenience and ensure a smooth transition during the construction phase.
As the demolition date approaches, further updates and detailed plans for the site will be made available by the council. Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to stay informed and participate in discussions regarding the future of Accrington’s evolving town center.
