Inigo Calderon explains half-time substitutions after Bristol Rovers’ defeat vs Wycombe

Inigo Calderon has explained his decision to replace Scott Sinclair and Luke Thomas at half-time in Bristol Rovers’ defeat to Wycombe Wanderers with the Gas boss admitting he felt he needed the extra time to explain the plan to his players.

Rovers’ three-match unbeaten run in League One was brought to an end at Adams Park on Tuesday evening as they were beaten 2-0 by Mike Dodds’ side with goals from Cameron Humphreys and Dan Udoh the difference between the two sides.

Despite his team’s impressive display in the first period, Calderon opted to change the shape with Taylor Moore introduced in midfield and Sil Swinkels on the left of defence. While both players played a part in Wycombe’s two goals, Calderon felt he had to make the changes to ensure the players understood his game plan.

“Because for me it was coming,” the Rovers boss replied when asked for his thinking behind the substitutions. “Sometimes you wait to change in the second half and think, let’s wait 10 minutes, 15 minutes and see if we improve but we wanted to change a lot of things.

“Not the players, the players were not the problem, it was more everything. We wanted to change a lot of things and I prefer to do it half-time because you have more time to talk to the players. You have 15 minutes to talk to the players and make sure we understand the new plan.
