WSL: Leicester City score three in win against relegation rivals Aston Villa
After a lackluster performance the previous time out and the lowest goalscoring record in the WSL, Leicester City sought to get back on track. This game proved to be the ideal chance for these two clubs to regain their goal-scoring form, since they began the game one point apart. Natalia Arroyo, the new manager of Aston Villas, was hopeful that her squad could regain their WSL form at a pivotal point in their season, as their lone victory until date came in the FA Cup.
Leitzig; Cayman, Chossenotte, Eiríksdóttir; Ale, Thibaud, Howard, Bott, Mace, Tierney, Goodwin.
D’Angelo; Baijings, Nobbs, Hanson, Daly, Robinson, Nunes, Parker, Patten, Mayling, and Maritz.
The opening half got off to a fast start for two underconfident clubs near the bottom of the WSL standings. Hlín Eiríksdóttir, a striker for New Leicester, outmuscled the Aston Villa defense and squared the ball to teammate Shauna Chossenotte, who missed it entirely. Then, for Aston Villa, Katie Robinson came very close. She did, however, miss Janina Leitzig’s far post with her effort in the Leicester goal.
With brilliant vision from Sophie Howard, who chipped the ball over Villa’s backline and into her path, Belgium international Cayman went one better up the other end for Leicester, slotting past Sabrina D’Angelo in the 29th minute.
The fact that Yuka Momiki replaced Sam Tierney after he was substituted off due to injury was a bad point for the Foxes. Prior to Noelle Maritz poking home, the Japanese international’s second goal was disallowed due to a foul on her during the build-up. At halftime, the score was 1-0.
In four hectic minutes in the second half, the Foxes ended the game. To her teammates’ joy, Janice Cayman volleyed beautifully in her second. After some excellent effort by Ruby Mace and Sophie Howard, defender Julie Thibaud made her way home from close range. Villa had 70 percent possession, but they were hardly a threat. Kirtsy Hanson and Chastity Grant both fired long-range shots that flew over. The Foxes prevailed 3-0 for just their third victory of the season.
With just four points separating them from Palace in the relegation zone, Aston Villa is still in a dangerous position. They will be looking to earn WSL points in their upcoming game against Everton on March 2nd, as they have already had three manager changes this season.
