Not just Harry Gray: Academy stars setting Leeds up for sustainable success

As the team prepares for the future under 49ers Enterprises, Leeds United maintained their outstanding play under Daniel Farke on

Monday night with a thrilling comeback victory over Sunderland.

Leeds charging towards promotion

Since Andrea Radrizzani sold the 49ers group his controlling share in the summer of 2023, it’s safe to say that the atmosphere at
Elland Road has changed. The first task for the new owners was to move a significant number of the players signed under “Radz,”
almost all of whom had absurd relegation clauses and high salaries.

Only Rasmus Kristensen is still there after 18 months of a swarm of those signings filling the books while going on loan; the 27-year-

old is anticipated to finalise a permanent move to Eintracht Frankfurt at the end of the current season.
And that conclusion looks more and more likely to come with the Whites back in the top flight, after a stunning brace from Pascal
Struijk rescued three points against Sunderland on Monday, with the Dutchman sending a warning to Leeds’ promotion rivals.
Leeds is now the overwhelming favourite to earn automatic promotion ahead of a fierce matchup with chasers Sheffield United next
Monday night. They have won four straight league games, scoring 15 goals and giving up just one goal during that period.

But after the promotion dream is realised, the real test for the new owners starts. As it stands, all three promoted sides in the top

division are expected to tumble right back down for the second season in a row, with the step up becoming increasingly tough. But
fortunately for the Whites and Farke, their flourishing academy might be the secret to their success.

Two strikers on fire in Leeds academy

The two viable paths to succeed are either identifying top foreign talent and then selling them for enormous sums (probably best

known as the Brighton model) or developing those talents in your own academy, as PSR is stifling the spending of even the Premier

League’s largest clubs.

Leeds had, of course, already benefited from the latter tactic, developing Archie Grey into a premier player before selling him to

Tottenham Hotspur, much to the chagrin of many fans.

Fortunately for those fans, Archie’s younger brother Harry is another Grey making an appearance at Thorp Arch. This weekend, he

scored twice for the Under-21s in a 2-1 victory over Derby County, earning acclaim from analysts.

The 16 year-old has been recovering from a back injury since pre-season, but has now played 90 minutes in his last two Premier

League 2 appearances and looks back to his best.

He is not the only goal scorer in Yorkshire who is flourishing behind the scenes; 15-year-old Oliver Boast, who recently made his debut

in the Under-18 squad after excelling at the Under-16 level, has already scored once in the Under-18 Premier League and scored in the FA Youth Cup match against Manchester City earlier this month. Mattinson has named Boast the team’s best player, along with Grey.
