Middlesbrough’s rivals sack manager just weeks before Michael Carrick’s side head there

Luke Williams did not receive the same support at Swansea City that Michael Carrick did at Boro.

Swansea City’s manager Luke Williams was fired just over a fortnight before Middlesbrough’s Championship match against them.

On the same day that Boro backed Michael Carrick following their own fall in form, Williams was not granted the same luxury at the Swansea.com Stadium. The former Notts County manager was fired after seven defeats in nine games, which saw the Swans slump to 17th in the Championship table.

Boro travel to Swansea on March 8, with a new manager expected to be in place by then. However, their choice may have broader repercussions for Boro and the race for the top six, as Swansea visit fifth-placed Blackburn Rovers this weekend, who are still without a manager following John Eustace’s departure for Derby County. They’ve won two in a row under temporary manager David Lowe.
