Massive away win for Salisbury FC against Weston-Super-Mare

Massive away win for Salisbury FC against Weston-Super-Mare.

Salisbury defeated playoff-chasing Weston-super-Mare away thanks to goals from Aiden Elliott-Wheeler and Callum Watts. The first major action of the game occurred in the sixth minute. A well-executed Salisbury move was fizzed low into the penalty box. Noah Coppin was the first to try, but he couldn’t find the back of the net against his previous team. Moments later, more encouraging Whites’ build-up play resulted in Aiden Elliott-Wheeler getting possession in the home penalty area. The wideman slipped past his defender and blasted past Max Harris to open the scoring.

The Seagulls replied well, almost grabbing one back, but Salisbury custodian Rhys Byrne was able to secure the ball on the goal line, preventing Coulson from shooting home. Elliott-Wheeler continued to cause issues for the hosts in the first half. The loanee was relentless in attacking the Weston-super-Mare backline, causing havoc among them. Five minutes before the break, Coulson found room to cut in with his preferred right foot and whipped in a dangerous-looking cross. The cross defeated everyone and smashed the outside of the post.

Two minutes later, Elliott-Wheeler got in behind. He struck it early and dragged it wide.

The youngster then worked himself another opportunity immediately after, his quick footwork was too much for a couple of Weston defenders and left them out to dry, however, the finish wasn’t quite as grand, and Harris came out on top this occasion.
Action from Weston's home game with Salisbury

The Whites were the happier of the two teams at halftime, having produced one of their best first-half performances this season. Following a calm start to the second session, Tom Leggett took the first important action of the half. The replacement centre-back could only fire when Callum Watts identified him. Five minutes later, Leggett came even closer to increasing Salisbury’s advantage. Jordan Ragguette beat Weston’s captain Lewis and passed to Leggett, whose shot was inches shy from finding the bottom corner of Harris’ net. In the 71st minute, replacement Lewis Brown found himself one-on-one with Harris, but the youthful Cherries loanee could only drag his shot wide of the post.

Ruben Reid’s unimpressive header was the hosts’ last first-half chance in the second period, with ten minutes remaining in normal time. Two minutes later, Sam Pearson slipped in at the back post to equalise for Somerset after Borges crossed a fine ball in. This was clearly out of the ordinary. Just as the momentum began to shift in the host’s favour, Salisbury discovered some genuine talent. A direct ball forward found the heel of Brown’s boot, and the player flicked the ball cutely into the path of the alert Callum Watts, who tapped calmly home after what seemed like an age to restore a vital Whites lead.
