Sunderland agreed a deal for Southampton striker Adam Armstrong in the last transfer window, according to a report by Sunderland AFC News.
Sunderland wanted to land the attacker from the Premier League. However, SAFC ended up missing out on a move to fellow Championship side West Brom.
Armstrong, 28, was given the green light to head out the exit door by Southampton on a temporary basis this winter to get some more game time under his belt in the second tier. He scored the winner for his parent club in their play-off final win at Wembley last year against Leeds United.
According to the Black Cats were keen on getting him but he snubbed a switch to the Stadium of Light due to his Newcastle United allegiance. Regis Le Bris’ side swooped to secure the signature of Liverpool forward Jayden Danns instead to boost their attacking options.

Sunderland snubbed by Adam Armstrong
Armstrong knows where the back of the net is at Sunderland’s level and he would have been an eye-catching addition for the North East outfit.
Southampton signed him in 2021 and he has since made 142 appearances for the Hampshire club in all competitions, scoring 32 goals.

He scored 24 altogether last term to help them go up under former manager Russell Martin but has since struggled to find his shooting boots in the top flight, hence why he has been allowed to join West Brom.
After linking up with the Baggies, their sporting director Andrew Nestor told their website: “We are pleased to welcome Adam to The Hawthorns for the rest of the season. He has extensive experience in the Championship and a proven goalscoring record.
“We had always planned to reinforce our striker options and injuries have accelerated our need in this area. Adam is an ideal fit for our squad and very much suits our established style.”
Armstrong rose up through the academy at Newcastle United and was a regular at various different youth levels.
He was loaned out by the Toon Army to Coventry City, Barnsley, Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers before joining the latter on a permanent basis.
What now for Sunderland?
Sunderland are back in action on Monday evening against Leeds United.
The Black Cats won 2-0 at home to Luton Town last time out and will be eager to build some momentum.
