Arne Slot explains what he saw from Liverpool side for first time in ‘important’ Wolves win

Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday was a tremendous relief for Arne Slot, who

conceded in the 98th minute against Everton. It was anything but a straightforward afternoon at Anfield on Sunday,

as the Reds lost control of the game halfway through the second half when Matheus Cunha curled a spectacular

effort past Alisson Becker to cut the home team’s lead in half. Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah had given Liverpool a

seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League with goals in the first half.

Slot’s team managed to hold on for their 18th Premier League victory of the season and move seven points clear of

Arsenal despite failing to muster any shots on goal in the second half. This prevented a recurrence of the late collapse

in the Merseyside Derby.

Liverpool manager Slot responded, “Obviously, it was relief at the end, especially after what happened on

Wednesday and those last eight minutes where we conceded a goal,” when asked if he was relieved that his team had

won at his press conference after the game. You are so irritated because that circumstance might have an impact on

the next game and the ones that come after.

“And I believe you saw that we were a little like ‘oh’ after giving up against Everton in the final minute today at 2-1,

perhaps for the first time this season. I believe that was somewhat in our minds. And for that reason, on Wednesday,

our team was quite enraged.”

However, Slot maintained that his team’s mentality in the games against Wolves and Everton will be a beneficial

prelude to their forthcoming away games against Manchester City and Aston Villa.

“I don’t think the nerves were too much, I think it had something to do with how Wolves came out,” said Slot. “Under

the most trying conditions we have encountered this season, we shown tremendous mentality on Wednesday. It was

really difficult to accept that after leading 2-1 and playing the final 15 minutes, with everything that transpired during

that time, we had to settle for a draw.

We had to deal with the reality that, despite having a 2-0 lead, we believed we had scored 3-0 today—the precise call

to rule it out for offside—thinking we were going to score the penalty, but instead we were given the 2-1. Mentally, it’s

not always easy. And for that reason, these victories are possibly more crucial than exceeding Tottenham, as we did

in our 4-0 triumph two weeks ago.
