Wolves must regret losing loan “maestro” who’s worth 202% more than Munetsi

In the Premier League, the struggle for survival is intensifying. After 24 games, Wolverhampton Wanderers are now

on 19 points, just 21 points shy of the enchanted 40-point mark that is believed to almost ensure a team’s survival in

the top division for another season.

In the last few months of the season, the Old Gold will need its best players to perform. Rayan Ait-Nouri will be

crucial, as will Matheus Cunha. Given that both could go in the summer, these games might be their final ones

wearing Wolves jerseys. In January, they were also associated with a transfer away.

Matheus-Cunha-1

In their struggle for survival, Vitor Pereira will also be hopeful that his January additions can deliver some

outstanding performances. Marshall Munetsi, the new midfielder, will be crucial.

Munetsi’s January move to Wolves

Munetsi, a midfielder from Zimbabwe, was acquired by the Old Gold on the last day of the January 2025 transfer

window. The 28-year-old reportedly paid £17 million to join from Stade Reims, a French team.

He has an outstanding record for the Ligue 1 team. Munetsi scored 21 goals and dished out 14 assists while wearing

the Reims jersey 159 times overall. He is a flexible player who can play as a number six, number eight, or even a

number ten in the midfield.

The midfielder has made one appearance for the Old Gold thus far, making his FA Cup debut against Championship

team Blackburn Rovers in a 24-minute cameo.

So, although it is early days, the signs that Munetsi might become an excellent player for the Old Gold are certainly

positive ones. He could be a huge figure in their battle for Premier League survival.

But it might make Wolves supporters nostalgic for a former midfielder who is now a fantastic player in his own right

and is considerably more valuable than the £17 million they spent on Munetsi.

The former Wolves midfielder worth more than Munetsi

Vitinha, a former Wolves loanee, has risen to the top quite quickly. The Portugal international, who is now

flourishing at Paris Saint-Germain, moved to Molineux during the 2020–21 season on a season-long loan. They

chose not to exercise the buy option in the transaction.

Vitinha-Wolves-1

It is reasonable to state that the Portuguese midfielder’s situation did not always turn out well. He made 22

appearances for the team in all competitions, although he only managed one goal and one assist. His one goal against

non-league Chorley was a magnificent FA Cup fourth-round goal.

Vitinha has established himself in PSG’s midfield while playing for the Old Gold. He has made 125 appearances for

the team, contributing 11 goals and ten assists, including 11 in Ligue 1 last season.

Along with players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes, he is a major member of Portugal’s Euro 2024

squad and has three assists during the competition.

He has 25 caps for his country so far.

Vitinha

As Statman Dave put it, the “maestro” is now worth a lot more than what Wolves spent for Munetsi.Vitinha is valued

at £51.4 million, 202% more than the amount they paid for their new midfield player, according to Football

Transfers.

He was also remarkably nominated for the 2024 Ballon d’Or, as if that weren’t enough.

According to Squawka’s statistics, there appears to be a reasonable valuation discrepancy. The Portugal star

outperformed Munetsi in a number of categories, including chances created, with 1.5 vs 0.5 per game, according to

data from the 2023–24 Ligue 1 season.

On reflection, the Old Gold might be kicking themselves that they didn’t get the most out of Vitinha during his time

at Molineux. Given his value now, and how much more he is worth compared to Munetsi, he could have been a key

man in Pereira’s midfield.

Wolves could have wished they had just used Vitinha’s buyout clause in his loan agreement, as they would have been

in possession of an exceptional and costly player.
