Tottenham face Alejo Véliz problem after ‘nonsensical’ transfer decision
Alejo Véliz looks to be the latest transfer mistake made by Tottenham.
Daniel Levy has signed off on some dreadful transfers in recent years, including the likes of Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso.
Decisions like these are just one of the many reasons why fans are so furious with the chairman as large-scale protests are planned ahead of the clash with Manchester United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (16 February).
Ndombele and Lo Celso both cost the club big money and while the addition of Véliz wasn’t anywhere near as expensive as those two transfers, it could still end up being another decision which costs Tottenham.
Tottenham face Alejo Véliz problem
Véliz is currently on loan with Espanyol, where the striker has scored just once in 19 La Liga appearances and is struggling for game time.
As a result, Véliz was expected to be recalled to Tottenham during the winter transfer window.
owever, he remains in Spain, and Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – thinks the club have a problem when it comes to the 21-year-old.
“Véliz is continuing to struggle in Spain,” Wenham said.
“He isn’t scoring, and he wasn’t recalled to the club either. Therefore, it looks as though we suddenly have a bit of a problem situation with a player who cost £13million.
“It seems like another bit of poor recruitment from the club because he isn’t even getting game time in Spain. Tottenham already had Lankshear when they signed Véliz. As a result, that transfer decision seemed nonsensical at the time.”
Tottenham to cut ties with Alejo Véliz?
Véliz is still young and has plenty of time to turn things around. However, he has so far struggled to show any signs that he can become the player Spurs expected him to become when they brought him to England from Argentina.
In addition, with the likes of Dominic Solanke, Richarlison, Will Lankshear and Dane Scarlett all already at the club, the striker position looks crowded, which could make it difficult for Véliz to earn any opportunity unless at least a couple of those players are moved on.
Therefore, it looks as though this might go down as yet another transfer mistake at Tottenham.
