Hearts 1-3 Rangers: Two McCart own goals seal visitors’ fifth straight league win.
-
Rangers made it five straight Scottish Premiership wins in a row, though they were aided by two own goals at Tynecastle.
Rangers won their fifth Scottish Premiership game in a row, 3-1, thanks to two own goals by Jamie McCart. Vaclav Cerny also scored his 10th league goal of the season for Philippe Clement’s side, which rebounded following a shock Scottish Cup loss to Queen’s Park the previous weekend. Rangers took the lead in the 20th minute at Tynecastle when Craig Gordon parried Ianis Hagi’s low cross past McCart and into his own net. Hearts sought a reaction, and Jack Butland made three great saves to deny Elton Kabangu, as well as tipping over Lawrence Shankland’s diving long-range volley. However, the equaliser did arrive four minutes after the restart, with Michael Steinwender heading home from James Penrice’s corner.
Nonetheless, the visitors reclaimed the lead shortly after the hour mark when Cerny fired in from close range, and a second McCart own goal in the 73rd minute ended the game for Hearts.
Data Debrief: McCart sets new record as Rangers equal one
McCart had a bad day, and he accidentally inscribed his name into history. He is the first player in Scottish Premiership history to score two own goals in one game. Meanwhile, Rangers extended their unbeaten streak against Hearts to 18 matches in all competitions. They also matched the club record of five consecutive Scottish Premiership victories by more than one goal, which they set under Michael Beale in April 2023. On an individual level, Tavernier became the first non-Scottish player to reach 300 appearances in the division since its redesign in 2013.
