‘Dropped it’ – Coventry City match-winner reacts to James Beadle howler during Sheffield Wednesday clash
Sheffield Wednesday lost badly after giving up in extra time.
Ellis Simms of Coventry City was prepared to fight for a lost cause on Saturday, but James Beadle’s error gave him
the opportunity to win 2-1 over Sheffield Wednesday in the closing minutes.
After rallying from behind to tie the score after one hour before squandering several opportunities to turn their
impressive performance into three points, the Owls were destined for a pretty unpleasant draw at Hillsborough.
Danny Röhl’s team had 22 shots on goal compared to the visitor’s nine, and they once again lost due to wastefulness
in front of goal.
However, the situation worsened during extra time when Simms knocked his opponent’s custodian out of the way
and then rolled into an empty net to score all three points when Beadle mishandled a desperate long ball at his feet.
The inexperienced Wednesday goalie was in a terrible situation, but one Coventry match-winner was more than glad
to take advantage of it.
“I’m delighted, in football you have to play to the final whistle, so it was a nice goal at the and to get the three points
is massive for us,” Simms told Coventry’s website. “We had to dig in, it was a tough game today, they’ve got quality so
we had to defend well and defend the box.
The game would end after that, so I decided to just run and chase it down. The game would end after that, and I
would then get back in position. I glanced at the time and I believe it was the 93rd minute. However, I managed to
track it down, and the keeper dropped it the next minute, which I then tucked home. It’s a wonderful sensation, and
like I mentioned, you simply need to play to the whistle.
Simms proved to be the difference on Saturday, with the 24-year-old providing a clinical edge that Wednesday were
lacking. The powerful striker opened the scoring for his side on 16 minutes after meeting a deep cross with his head –
something manager Frank Lampard had seemingly been working on through the week.
“To try and get it into the box was the message when we played with two strikers today,” Simms continued. I glanced
it home and kind of got over to my man. Following that, there were times when we had to endure a little hardship
since we knew they were a strong team, particularly at this stadium with such fervent supporters. Nevertheless, we
had to play excellent defence and, all things considered, we gave it our all.
“I think getting the three points is the main thing, we want to be looking upwards, so we need to get points on the
board to do that. Fair enough it wasn’t the prettiest game but at the end of the day were coming home with three
points.”
