Newcastle United could be set for an influx of money thanks to a ruling against the Premier League on Friday.
It was reported that the Premier League’s Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules were declared null and void with an independent tribunal siding with Manchester City, who took the Premier League to court after two of their deals were blocked.
The news is positive for Newcastle United who could be set for fresh sponsorships from the PIF which would be worth considerably more than what they are currently receiving.
Newcastle fans called for Richard Masters to resign following the announcement – the rules were put in place following the Saudi-backed takeover of the club in 2021.
Although the Magpies should be better off after the decision, UEFA rules will still affect Newcastle if they qualify for a European competition like the Champions League next season.
Former Newcastle owner Amanda Staveley fought tooth and nail for the club during her two-and-a-half years at the helm.
She worked closely with the PIF to secure funding for transfers but left alongside Merhdad Ghodoussi after the disastrous PSR deadline where Newcastle had to sell Elliot Anderson alongside Yankuba Minteh to avoid a points deduction.
With the PIF now able to hand Newcastle more money through sponsorships, Staveley’s opinion on the original ATP ruling has resurfaced.
Amanda Staveley on damaging Newcastle ATP rules
While Staveley may not be part of the daily running of the club anymore, she still follows the club as much as possible.
Staveley congratulated Newcastle on reaching the Carabao Cup final in February, saying the achievement was ‘incredible’.
Reports in July 2024 stated that Eddie Howe was saddened by Staveley’s exit. The Newcastle boss believed he lost a close ally at the club when she and Ghodoussi left.
According to the Chronicle, Man City used Staveley’s quotes from 2021 as evidence as to why the Premier League’s ATP rules were so damaging to clubs.
Staveley was believed to be frustrated by the rules and suggested that there was a “fear we would have an unfair advantage” She even went as far as to say that other clubs would do “everything they can to make sure” the Champions League places are available for “as few people as possible.”
Staveley will surely be pleased to see the ruling go in favour of clubs like Newcastle who have felt the blows of the rules.
Amanda Staveley’s plans after Newcastle exit
After leaving Newcastle in 2024, Staveley has not made many public appearances.
Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes supported Staveley on social media after her departure was announced. It was evident that she had left her mark on the players, staff and the fanbase.
The 51-year-old has been working in the background on a proposed return back to football. Reports claim that Staveley wants to buy Tottenham Hotspur and has been working alongside American and Middle Eastern businessmen to try and make a deal happen.
Tottenham would cost Staveley £3bn, significantly more than the £300m paid for Newcastle back in 2021. While she could soon return to football, Staveley will always be recognised as one of the most important and influential figures in Newcastle’s history.
