How Josh Sargent’s wages at Norwich City compare to the best Championship strikers
Following Norwich’s heartbreaking 4-0 loss to Leeds United in the play-off semi-finals the previous season, David Wagner’s tenure as the club’s manager came to an end.
It has been a bit of a transitional season under the Dane as the Canaries try to bring in a number of younger players in an effort to lower the average age of their team. In the summer, Johannes Hoff Thorup took over as head coach, replacing Wagner.
Despite this, Norwich is still very much in the running for the final two slots in the top six, and their chances of getting promoted have been greatly increased by the recent return of talisman Josh Sargent after an injury layoff.
Now that Sargent is healthy and playing well, we examined his salary at Carrow Road and how it stacks up against some of the top Championship strikers.
Sargent is paid £25,000 a week and £1,300,000 annually at Norwich, according to Capology, however it should be emphasized that they are only estimates.
Along with goalie Angus Gunn and midfielder Kenny McLean, Sargent is now the Canaries’ joint-second highest paid contracted player; nevertheless, two players earn more than the three.
Norwich City’s top five biggest earners (as per Capology) | ||
Player | Estimated weekly wage | Estimated annual wage |
Shane Duffy | £35,000 | £1,820,000 |
Jack Stacey | £35,000 | £1,820,000 |
Angus Gunn | £25,000 | £1,300,000 |
Josh Sargent | £25,000 | £1,300,000 |
Kenny McLean | £25,000 | £1,300,000 |
Sargent had a difficult first season at Carrow Road after joining Norwich from German team Werder Bremen for an estimated £8 million in the summer of 2021. He only managed four goals in 29 games as the team was demoted from the Premier League.
Sargent, however, has undoubtedly settled into the Championship. Despite missing more than four months of the 2022–2023 season due to injury, he scored 16 goals in 30 games last season after scoring 13 goals in 41 games the previous season.
This season, Sargent has been beset by injuries once more. He had groin surgery in October, which kept him out for over three months, but since returning last month, he has been playing well.
It is safe to say that Sargent has earned every cent of his large contract at Norwich over the previous several years. Thorup’s team will have a good chance of making the playoffs if the 24-year-old can maintain his fitness through the end of the season.
