Historic England releases aerial photo archive of North East and Cumbria.

In October 1927, when this image was shot, Newcastle United were reigning First Division champions, their fourth and final league triumph.

An online collection containing aerial pictures of North East and Cumbria history has been launched.

Historic England stated that its new Aerial Photography Explorer offers a “fascinating insight” into the region’s evolution. The images show Newcastle United’s St James’ Park in 1927, Lake District forts, and the construction of the Tees Newport Bridge in the 1930s. The archive has 400,000 photographs spanning over 30% of England.
